![]() ![]() This culture only became more negative as Dr. The complex went from being a resort-like treatment to an almost apocalyptic prison feeling. ![]() DeJarnette changed the atmosphere and culture of the facility greatly. During his time as Director of Western State Hospital, Dr. DeJarnette was also known to idolize Nazi Germany and their eugenic efforts, lobbying aggressively for the state of Virginia to pass similar sterilization laws. After the facility was opened, it was renamed in 1894 to Western State Hospital in efforts to broaden its reputation and to provide the community with greater care options.ĭr. The facility was formed after the presidential election in 1828 of Andrew Jackson who started the national trend on humanitarian causes, which ultimately catalyzed the project’s construction, placing Staunton on the map in terms of behavioral healthcare. The asylum was also well known for its resort-style features, including a park-like campus, walking trails, gardens, and amenities like a fitness center, pool, and chapel. ![]() It was easily accessible by many major routes and was centrally located within the western portion of the state. The asylum quickly became an infamous treatment facility, mostly due to the location within the state of Virginia. The organization was formed as a retreat for adults and adolescents who were suffering from learning disorders, mental health issues, and those needing rehabilitation treatments. The center was once part of the newly formed mental institution in Staunton, known as Western Lunatic Asylum, which was founded in 1828. The history of the buildings began almost 200 years ago.
